too many vegans are sleeping on these two superfoods…

It is surprising—and honestly concerning—how many vegans overlook their daily omega-3 needs. In our coaching, client after client mentions they rarely or never eat flax or chia seeds or take a supplement.

Skipping essential fatty acids is playing with fire; failing to secure proper intake can lead to subtle, long-term compromises to brain health, cognitive function, and cardiovascular wellness that are completely avoidable.

The Omega-3 Powerhouses: Flax & Chia

Plenty of plant foods contain traces of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), but flaxseeds and chia seeds are in a league of their own. Just one to two tablespoons of ground flax combined with a tablespoon of chia seeds easily meets your baseline daily requirement.

However, getting the most out of these seeds comes down to how you prepare them:

  • Whole Seeds: Passing through intact. Whole flax and chia seeds have protective outer hulls that human digestive enzymes can’t easily break down. If eaten whole, they often pass right through your system without releasing their ALA.

  • Soaked Seeds: Soaking chia seeds makes them far more digestible than dry, whole seeds and turns them into a great gel/pudding texture, but soaking whole seeds still doesn't match the nutrient bioavailability of grinding.

  • Ground/Milled Seeds: The gold standard. Research highlighted by Dr. Michael Greger shows that while consuming whole seeds results in virtually no increase in blood omega-3 levels, milled or ground seeds trigger a dramatic rise in bioavailable ALA.

Understanding the Cyanide "Risk" & The Power of Lignans

Dr. Greger often fields questions about the naturally occurring cyanogenic glycosides in raw flaxseeds, noting that a safe daily upper limit for raw intake is put at around 1.5 to 2 tablespoons.

Here's the reality: the dose makes the poison. You would need to consume massive, unrealistic quantities of raw ground flax in a single sitting to approach any toxic threshold. Furthermore, light cooking or baking inactivates the enzymes responsible for cyanide production. The immense, evidence-backed benefits of flaxseed far outweigh any theoretical risk.

One of those non-negotiable benefits is lignans. Flaxseeds contain up to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods

Why Lignans Matter: Post-mortem studies show that a staggering percentage of older men have underlying prostate cancer cells, whether it was their cause of death or not. Lignans are among the most potent dietary compounds shown to help protect against hormone-driven cancers, including both prostate and breast cancers.

Balancing the Scale: The Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio

Getting enough omega-3 isn't just about absolute numbers; it's about the ratio.

Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory. While your body requires acute inflammation for healing and immune response, standard modern diets flood the system with an excess of omega-6s (often 15:1 or 20:1). Dr Greger recommends keeping your overall ratio down closer to 4:1 or lower.

How to Get Them In Daily

The easiest way to hit your daily requirement is to lock it into your morning routine:

  • Stir 1–2 tablespoons of freshly ground flax and chia directly into your morning porridge.

  • Blend them straight into a morning smoothie.

If morning meal prep slips by, a quick afternoon Chia Pudding saves the day.
