Healthy homemade Vegan margarine alternative

Struggling to find something healthy to spread on your bread? We get it. Most shop-bought margarines are loaded with palm oil, additives, or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils—the kind that create trans fats and increase the risk of heart disease. So if you’re looking for a quick, wholesome option you can feel good about, this homemade sunflower seed spread is a perfect solution.

Made almost entirely from whole foods, it’s a brilliant staple to keep in your fridge and works beautifully in all kinds of dishes—from toast and sandwiches to warm potatoes and veggies. Using sunflower seeds gives it a mild, neutral base that blends into a silky-smooth, creamy spread. It’s freezer-friendly, inexpensive, rich in nutrients, and is naturally vegan, nut-free, and allergy-friendly.

If you’re trying to cut down on processed junk, this is a fantastic swap: creamy enough for toast, wholesome enough for everyday use.

  1. Soak the sunflower seeds for at least 10 minutes; overnight is preferable.

  2. Drain the sunflower seeds and add them to a blender with 100ml of water, turmeric, and salt.

  3. Blend until smooth, you may need to use your blenders tamper to press down the mixture.

  4. Line a bowl with parchment paper.

  5. Add 80ml of water and the agar agar to a pan. Bring to a boil and then quickly reduce to a very gentle simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

  6. Add it into the blender and mix for a few more seconds to incorporate.

  8. Enjoy!

So there you have it – a healthy spread that's not only incredibly flavourful but also nourishing and kind to the planet!

Store it in the fridge for up to 5 days or in the freezer for 3 months. We like to freeze ours in ice cube trays so we can defrost small portions of it as needed.
